Timeline: Season 5 episode 13 (The Song Remains the Same): When Dean and Sam return to the 1978 to stop Anna from killing their parents, Michael possesses the body of John Winchester. Canon point is when the conversation ends and Michael brings both vessels back to their original time.

Personality:
The Good Son
Throughout season 5 (and even before that), it was constantly mentioned that Archangel Michael was the 'good son'. When Gabriel was trapped by the Winchesters in holy oil, he had mentioned that he loved both his brothers, Michael and Lucifer, but the war was caused by their betrayal and turning on each other. Gabriel mentioned that Sam and Dean should be able to relate. Gabriel mentions that like Dean, Michael was a big brother who was loyal to an absent father.

This reveals a huge part of Michael's personality.

View of Humans and demons
Michael does not necessarily love humans as much as Gabriel loves them. He doesn't despise humans as much as Lucifer does either. In fact, he deals with them with a sense of separation. Because of his love and loyalty to God, he loved humans to a great degree but not affectionately so. He bowed when he was asked to bow, not like Lucifer who ignored the order. However, just like anything, his actions are fueled by his fierce loyalty to God.

Just like Dean (earlier in the series), there's always a question of are you good or evil in deciding which course of action to take. This is because Michael will never associate himself with something evil. He is focused on following his Father's orders and being the good son. He rejects anything that isn't good, however, he isn't seen readily destroying anything evil in the world, even if he does have the power to do so. If any word would describe his relationship with humans, it would be apathy.
